Mountain living equates with hardcore playing and we mountain folk all have our different approaches to how hard we like to play. Some of us are more aggressive than others, wearing our Fitbits and logging into Strava before we begin our ascensions up our favorite mountain trails, tracking our mileage, and testing our strength with each new workout. Others of us like the physicality of pushing ourselves, but are in no hurry, breathing in the cerebral benefits as our blood pumps through our bodies, and then there are those of us who enjoy taking long walks with family, friends, pups, and yes, even cats. Regardless of who we are and what type of exercise we prefer, there is a common thread that connects us all together, and that is that we all love to move our bodies, and live for being out in nature. In the transitional months of October and November, when it becomes too snowy to bike and a bit too cold for us to be outside since our bodies haven't yet adjusted to the drop in temperature, many of us turn to our favorite gyms and yoga studios for deep restorative healing from our summer antics, and to get our quads turned on so we can tax our bodies all over again in the snow. So where do we go?
One of the worst-kept secrets in Aspen is that it’s chock-full of incredible and eye-opening ways to get your heart rate up, ways that go beyond outdoor sports like skiing, hiking, biking, and climbing on rocks. Aspen is home to some of the world’s best athletes; by that we mean not just pro skiers and snowboarders, but everyday folks who happen to have an undying passion for yoga, cycling, Pilates, and really anything and everything in between. We’re talking internationally trained and recognized gurus with certifications and educations that make them masters in their field. Lucky for us, they chose our little mountain town as their home base; and we have the chance to reap the benefits of their teachings any day of the week.
We’re in the head-first dive into spring, and while we know that means mud, it also means we’ll be flicking that switch into shorts and sports bra weather, trading in our skis for sneakers and hiking boots, snow pants for bike shorts, and ski goggles for swim goggles. And while we Aspenites inevitably be spending our spring and summer afternoon hours in lakes, on trails, and up on mountain faces, we’ll also be looking for creative pro-led outlets to be guided into better health indoors. Which begs the question: where to begin? Check out our list below—from yoga studios up and down valley, to hot pilates, cycling, and meditation classes guaranteed to better your health and keep those endorphins up any time of the year.
Below is a list of Yoga studios where the vibe is alive and electrified. This list is not exhaustive, we just picked out the studios we know and love.
Aspen Yoga Studios
Aspen Shakti
Owned by the beautiful and talented Jayne Gottlieb, Aspen Shakti is a warm and welcoming studio located right in town, a block East of the Aspen Art Museum. Descending the stairway inspirational quotes like; "Don't you know it yet? It is your light that lights the worlds," pop out from soothing red painted walls encouraging one to tap into one's higher self. An ethereal pair of wings created by the talented local artist, Nicole Gogolak, hang at the bottom of the stairs as if to help you to take flight.
Jayne teaches the Radiant and EmPower Flow classes. These are high energy classes where Jayne's positive energy radiates through to her students, energizing the room with a vibrant light and bringing out the spiritual warrior in all of us. Jayne's New Moon and Full Moon Rituals yoga classes with DJ Bhakti Styler are not to be missed, helping one to reset and recharge to empowering music.
NOTE: For the ultimate Aspen summer experience, hike the Ute Trail and continue up to the top of Aspen in time for an outdoor yoga class overlooking the Elk Mountain Range at 11,212 feet. Don't want to hike? Catch a ride on the Silver Queen Gondola using your season pass or you can purchase a day pass $40 ticket through Aspen Snowmass. Bring water, a sweater, and a raincoat, and make sure to visit alltrails.com for directions so you don't get lost.

Arjuna Hot Yoga
This heated studio provides both creative, dynamic, energized vinyasa flow as well as deep stretching, static, restorative postures all practiced in a warm environment. If you are looking for the 26 & 2 yoga series, this is your place. They also are purported to have a kickass hot pilates mat class.
02 Aspen Yoga Studio & Spa
02 Aspen has incredible yoga practitioners who are constantly changing up their flows and helping their students to get deeper into postures. Offering Pilates and Yoga classes, as well as their spa services, 02 also is a great place to shop for yoga and comfort clothes.
Downvalley Yoga Studios
Kula Yoga On Main, Carbondale
A boutique yoga studio specializing in meditative practice and flexibility for all bodies. Kula is the Sanskrit word loosely translated to mean community. I have heard so many fantastic things about this place, it is the next place I'll go to check it out.

Old Town Yoga, Basalt
Owner, Carlie Urell, just opened her new yoga studio on the river walk in old town Basalt. Old Town Yoga will offer Bhakti yoga, or “yoga of devotion,” which involves chanting and music plus a variety of themed classes in collaboration with local entities, including a class for mothers and babies. Through a partnership with Eagle County’s “Healthy Aging” program, the studio will also launch a complimentary class for seniors with a suggested $5 donation, in addition to other affordable options including a non-senior donation-based class and online video classes.

True Nature Healing Arts, Carbondale
An unbelievably beautiful and intentional sanctuary located in Carbondale, offering yoga, an Ayurvedic spa, a tea room, and an eco-friendly boutique, surrounded by a tranquil peace garden, I was able to take a yoga class there with my friend Jennifer Lane teaching. Used to the fast pace, it wasn't so easy to move slowly and hold postures for what felt like forever, but Jennifer gently led us through it.
If I lived in Carbondale I would go to all of their nutrition and meditation classes, and would definitely go to their yoga classes, especially when Jennifer is teaching.
The Vinmana House, Basalt
This is our riverside studio that we've been practicing in for over 15 years. Emily Longfellow's teachers are fantastic and they have a wide variety. They keep the studio really hot and many of us cold plunge after class. I haven't been yet but word is that the Sculpt Yoga class with Emilee (with an e) is wicked hard, but soooo good. We'll have to go and write about it.
White Horse Yoga, Carbondale
Founder of White Horse Yoga, Bel Carpenter, is an incredible teacher who will get you into the best shape of your life through helping you to build strength and flexibility, heal injuries, gain mental peace, lose weight and fulfill your dreams!
I'm sure we've left studios out, so please email us with your favorite places!! We'll do our best to add your feedback in this blog post: aspenreallife@gmail.com
