Summer is in full swing, and if you're wondering what's actually worth getting off the couch for, here's where I'd be this week. From live music and art openings to rodeos, trail runs, and one of Anderson Ranch's biggest annual celebrations, there's something happening in every corner of the valley.
Thursday: Music, Mountains & Pink Cowboys
If you've never experienced Tough Enough to Wear Pink, head to the Gus Darien Riding Arena in Carbondale. The annual rodeo fundraiser combines western tradition with community spirit, all while raising awareness for breast cancer.
For music lovers, Thursday offers two completely different vibes. The Snowmass Free Concert Series welcomes The Droptines to Fanny Hill—always one of my favorite places to spread out a blanket and enjoy a summer evening. Or, if you're craving a little nostalgia, 40oz. To Freedom brings Sublime's music to Belly Up Aspen.
Friday: Art, Dance & Great Music
Friday is one of those days where you'll have to choose wisely.
Start with Ashley Collins' Art Reception at Aspen Grove Fine Arts, where the acclaimed artist will be celebrating her newest collection.
The evening then splits in several exciting directions.
DanceAspen celebrates its Studio 54 Gala at Hotel Jerome, promising an evening of disco glamour, incredible performances, and one of the summer's most festive parties.
Challenge Aspen hosts its annual Denim & Diamonds Gala, supporting an organization that continues to enrich lives throughout our valley.
Music lovers can choose between soulful blues and R&B with The Boneshakers at the Paul JAS Center or country favorite Paul Cauthen at Belly Up Aspen.
If contemporary dance is more your style, don't miss Aspen Dance Connection's "Emergence" at TACAW, showcasing Colorado choreographers and dancers.
And for those looking for an athletic challenge, the legendary Audi Power of Four Trail Run returns to Aspen Snowmass, sending runners across all four mountains in one unforgettable day.
Saturday: One of My Favorite Summer Traditions
If there's one event I never miss, it's the Anderson Ranch Picnic & Auction.
For more than 40 years, Anderson Ranch Arts Center has brought together artists, collectors, families, and the community for a day filled with art, live music, children's activities, great food, and one of the valley's most exciting silent auctions. Having just finished my documentary photography workshop there, I have an even greater appreciation for what this incredible organization brings to our community.
While you're in Aspen, don't miss the Saturday Aspen Farmers Market, still one of my favorite weekly rituals for local produce, artisan foods, flowers, and people-watching.
Music continues Saturday evening with The Brass-A-Holics at the Paul JAS Center, while comedian Tig Notaro brings her signature deadpan humor to TACAW for what is sure to be a sold-out show.
Opera lovers can also enjoy Edlis Neeson Opera Encounters at the Wheeler Opera House, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the next generation of extraordinary vocal talent.
Sunday: Dogs, Bluegrass & Soccer
Sunday belongs to the dogs.
The Aspen Animal Shelter Dog Day Carnival is always one of the happiest events of the summer, with food, music, games, adoptable pets, family activities, and plenty of wagging tails. Bring your dog—or simply come support one of the valley's organizations doing wonderful work for animals.
If soccer is your thing, head to the Paul JAS Center for the World Cup Finals Watch Party, complete with food and drink specials on the big screen.
Then finish the weekend the best way I know how—with Bluegrass Sundays atop Aspen Mountain as Sun Jr. performs on the Sundeck. Ride the gondola, grab lunch with friends, and soak in one of the most beautiful afternoons you'll spend all summer.
See You Out & About
There's something happening in nearly every corner of the Roaring Fork Valley this weekend, but remember—you don't have to do everything. My hope is simply to help you discover a few experiences you might not have otherwise found.
Keeping my finger on the pulse of the Roaring Fork Valley so you don't have to.
