Hiking Cathedral Lake in Aspen: One of Colorado’s Most Rewarding Alpine Hikes
There are certain hikes around Aspen that locals return to year after year, not because they are easy, but because they remind us why we live here in the first place. Cathedral Lake is one of those hikes.
Tucked high in the Elk Mountains just outside of Aspen, Cathedral Lake rewards hikers with wildflowers, aspen groves, dramatic mountain views, waterfalls, and finally, an impossibly beautiful alpine lake sitting beneath the jagged face of Cathedral Peak.
It’s challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment, but accessible enough for adventurous visitors and strong teens looking to experience a true Colorado alpine hike.
My Story Hiking Cathedral Lake
I still remember one of the first times I hiked Cathedral Lake with my boys when they were younger. Like many Aspen kids, they had endless energy at the start of the trail, racing ahead while I carried the snacks, extra layers, and the constant reminder to “slow down and drink water.”
The trail climbs steadily almost immediately, weaving through shady pine forests before opening up to breathtaking mountain views that somehow make you forget your burning legs for a few minutes. At one point, one of my boys dramatically announced he was “definitely dying,” only to sprint ahead ten minutes later after spotting patches of snow higher up the mountain.
That’s the magic of Cathedral Lake. It pushes you just enough that arriving at the lake feels emotional every single time.
And then suddenly, after the final climb, there it is: deep blue water reflecting rugged peaks, people quietly eating sandwiches on boulders, hikers laying in the grass, dogs splashing along the shoreline, and everyone collectively exhaling because they made it.
There’s something about alpine lakes that humbles you. Phones get put away. Conversations slow down. People soften a little.
It reminds me why I’m always encouraging families and visitors to get outside when they come to Aspen. The mountains change us.

Final Thoughts
What I love most about Cathedral Lake is that it offers something increasingly rare: perspective.
For a few hours, you stop thinking about emails, deadlines, social media, or whatever noise you brought with you. You focus on breathing, climbing, laughing, helping each other up rocky sections of trail, and finally sitting beside icy alpine water feeling incredibly small in the best possible way.
That’s Aspen at its best.
Not just luxury hotels and beautiful restaurants, but moments in nature that reconnect us to ourselves, each other, and the wildness that still exists here.
