Camino de Santiago
When not in class in San Sebastián, Karen had us continuously exploring different villages which we mostly got to by hiking on parts of the Camino del Norte, which starts in Irun on the French border and stretches 800 km (500 miles) to Santiago de Compostela.
Each village had its own rhythm and each hike led us through beautiful scenery, all starting at the coast and then climbing up, sometimes into vineyards with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. One night, we ended our hike with mojitos and marimba music
Gros to Pasais
The first hike we took started right on the outskirts of Gros. All the trails are well marked and we followed the arrows up a very steep hill where people were walking up and down with their groceries. The trail was beautiful with the deepest purple wild Hydrangea's. And although it continued to be a climb, there were mothers and their children in flip flops taking the shorter loop. Zarautz to Getaria
Our favorite hike, was when we took a bus to Zarautz from San Sebastián. From Zarautz you can walk on the path along the sea to Getaria. After a while the towns all began to look alike, each with its own restaurants that catered to tourists, and old fishing ports, and churches. But this hike was our favorite because returning to Zarautz we took a different route and hiked up the steep hills behind the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga into the hills and through Ameztoi & TX: Txomin Etxanix vineyards. Nobody seemed to know where the path was but if you just continue up your most likely to find it. Just look for glass elevator situated in the middle of nowhere like Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
Everywhere we went, including our home town where we were living, we ran into fiestas.
