While Aspen is known globally for luxury hotels, private clubs, and five-star experiences, there are still wonderful places to stay that allow visitors to experience the Roaring Fork Valley without completely destroying their travel budget. In fact, some of our favorite stays are the more relaxed, fisherman lodges, inns, and boutique hotels that offer charm, walkability, mountain views, and authentic Colorado atmosphere without the ultra-luxury price tag.
If you are open to staying slightly down valley in Basalt or Carbondale, you’ll often discover even more affordable options alongside a more laid-back and local experience.
We’ve curated some of our favorite (more) affordable hotels throughout Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley so you can experience mountain life a little more like a local.
Aspen Mountain Lodge
Centrally located and just steps away from all things Aspen, Aspen Mountain Lodge remains one of downtown’s most approachable boutique stays.
Guests love cozying up by the fireplace in the lobby or relaxing in the year-round outdoor pool and hot tub after a day of skiing, hiking, or biking. Early risers appreciate the complimentary continental breakfast, while free parking and walkability help visitors avoid some of Aspen’s biggest logistical headaches.
Rooms include:
- Flat-screen TVs
- Small refrigerators
- Work desks
- Free Wi-Fi
- Select balconies
Even better? Fido is welcome too.
Located just a short walk or bus ride from the Silver Queen Gondola, Aspen Mountain Lodge also sits conveniently on the bus route connecting Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. The Music Tent, Aspen Institute, restaurants, nightlife, and trails are all within easy reach.
Mountain Chalet Aspen
For those wanting old-school Aspen charm, Mountain Chalet remains one of the town’s most iconic and beloved lodging experiences.
Originally opened in 1954 by the Melville family, the lodge operated for nearly 70 years as a family-run property before being sold in 2021 to a partnership involving MML Hospitality and Kupperman Companies.
The property is currently undergoing a significant redevelopment and renovation intended to elevate the experience while preserving its historic mountain-lodge soul.
Located directly at the base of Aspen Mountain and just two blocks from the Silver Queen Gondola, Mountain Chalet has long been loved for:
- Its cozy atmosphere
- Included breakfast
- Incredible location
- Traditional Aspen character
Even as Aspen evolves, places like Mountain Chalet continue to carry pieces of the town’s original spirit.
Annabelle Inn
Originally founded in 1948 as The Christmas Inn, Annabelle Inn offers one of Aspen’s warmest and most welcoming boutique lodging experiences.
The family-owned property features a cozy cabin-inspired interior that immediately feels comfortable and inviting after a long travel day or outdoor adventure.
Its location near transit routes to all four Aspen Snowmass mountains makes it especially appealing for skiers, hikers, and visitors wanting easy access to the entire valley.
It’s charming, unpretentious, and feels refreshingly personal in a town increasingly dominated by luxury development.
St. Moritz Lodge & Condominiums
Located at the base of Shadow Mountain, St. Moritz Lodge is one of Aspen’s longtime hidden gems.
The European-inspired lodge features:
- Quiet gardens
- A tiled outdoor pool
- Sauna and hot tub access
- Hostel-style and private room options
- More affordable pricing than many nearby hotels
Its slightly tucked-away location offers a quieter atmosphere while still remaining close enough to walk into downtown Aspen.
For travelers wanting Aspen access without Aspen-level hotel pricing, St. Moritz often becomes a favorite repeat stay.
Independence Square Lodge
Location-wise, it’s hard to beat Independence Square Lodge.
Situated directly on Aspen’s Cooper Avenue walking mall and just one block from the Silver Queen Gondola, the historic lodge places visitors right in the center of downtown energy while still offering a more approachable lodging option compared to Aspen’s luxury hotels.
Managed by Frias Properties, the hotel underwent renovations to modernize its common areas while preserving its historic mountain-town character.
Guests also benefit from immediate access to:
- Rubey Park transit station
- Free ski shuttles
- Restaurants
- Shopping
- Nightlife
- Festivals and events
