A Condo in Akumal on the Beach in Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula:
We were heading to Mexico and I was worried. People were getting kidnapped from their homes, tour buses were getting held up in Peurto Vallarta and passports were being taken. It wouldn’t be the first time Wade and I cancelled a trip due to internal distress happening in the country of our destination.
The what ifs plagued my mind; what if something life altering happened to our family, it would be all my fault and there would be no going back. But I did my research and spoke to the locals, as well as to those who often visit Mexico from here, and it was recommended that we should stay the course…and so we did.
In the end, I am so glad that we went and stayed in a condo at Villas DeRosa in Akumal. I would recommend this place to everyone, that is if you like it peaceful and quiet. As it turns out, our life altering experience was one of peace and spiritually.
We bonded as a family on a beach where there were no distractions, except for when we chose to peek in on the all inclusive resorts nearby. We only wore bathing suits our entire stay. We climbed the stairs of a Mayan Temple and dug deep into the Mayan Calendar and the 2012 phenomenon. We swam with Barracudas and the endangered Green and Loggerhead turtles? and we snorkeled in the spiritual cenotes of Quintana Roo. We drank Virgin, and not so Virgin, boat drinks at a beach bar where time stood still and I read a beautiful 930 paged novel, Shantarum.
We shopped for our food in a local market and bought honey candies and Wade beat the swindlers at the gas station at their own game, we may be Gringos but we are not as stupid as we must look.
We jeeped into the jungle, ziplined and ate an authentic Mayan lunch that had cooked overnight in a fire made in the earth,? all through a great tour company, Edventure Tours,? and it was just as they said it would be, “The best day of our vacation”.
It was so worth the time and effort it took to get there and I am so happy to come home rejuvenated and with a new perspective on how to live more fully, peacefully and completely in the next nine months, until December 21, 2012, when a new beginning is predicted to take place.
